ABOUT

You + the Library + the Library Foundation

= A Winning Team

Nonprofit LA County Library Foundation, founded in 1982, raises funds and creates partnerships to strengthen and support LA County Library and the free programs, services and resources it provides to enrich the lives and communities of children, teens, and adults throughout LA County.

Public dollars don’t cover all the Library’s costs for the free services it provides with 86 libraries (including one in Central Juvenile Hall) and a mobile fleet of 18 vehicles serving 3.4 million people across more than 3,000 square miles.

The Library Foundation works to bridge that funding gap with gifts from private sources, including foundations, corporations, and individuals.

The Foundation is in re-start mode, with an Executive Director hired in 2019, the first paid staff in more than a decade. Grants from the City of Malibu and The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation are leveraging funds to build momentum.

Your donation to the Library Foundation is an investment in LA County Library and your community.

  • You are investing in literacy and lifelong learning.

  • You are investing in a stronger workforce.

  • You are investing in creativity.

  • You are investing in a more inclusive and culturally aware community.

Though Library doors are physically closed, there’s 24/7 access to electronic materials, including databases, and placing holds on circulating materials from any community library location.

Library staff continues to reimagine and reconfigure programming to safely and effectively meet community needs: 80 libraries offer Sidewalk Service to pick up holds, Laptop & Hotspot loans, and remote printing jobs; and virtual programming tailored to a range of audiences and needs, delights and educates toddlers to older adults.

During the pandemic, more than one-third of staff became disaster service workers (and many still are) – with Project Roomkey; food distribution; pick-up Lunch at the Library; at voting centers; contact tracing; sewing masks for frontline workers; and with a gift of 13 3D printers secured by the Foundation, printing thousands of parts for PPE face shields for emergency hospital workers.

LA County Library Foundation is working to make real its vision: to create widespread understanding that LA County library is a transformational force – socially and economically – in our communities.

And to translate that understanding into financial support that fills the gap between public funding and what Library services cost.
